Former FBI Director Pleads Not Guilty to Criminal Charges James Comey pleaded not guilty on October 8 to a pair of federal criminal charges sought by President Donald J. Trump. The former FBI director was indicted by a federal grand jury two weeks ago on one count of making false statements and one count of obstruction of a congressional proceeding. The charges are connected to Comey’s testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee in September 2020. Prosecutors allege he authorized a leak to the media about an FBI investigation through an anonymous source, but then testified to the Senate that he had not. He could face up to five years in prison if convicted. A trial date has been set for January 5, but Comey’s attorney, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, revealed that he will be filing a motion to dismiss the case, accusing the Justice Department of malicious and selective prosecution. More From Biography “Frankly, we feel in this case the cart may have been put before the horse,” Fitzgerald said in court. “We’d like certain dispositive motions addressed first in the hopes a trial can be avoided. Comey, 64, has maintained his innocence since the indictment was announced. “My family and I have known for years that there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump,” he said in an Instagram video on September 25. “My heart is broken for the Department of Justice but I have great confidence in the federal judicial system, and I’m innocent.” PG PS The guy is exactly 10 years ilder than me ...
