When Kylie Corbitt got out of a 30-day addiction treatment center, a familiar problem was waiting outside.
“My entire network was all people who used,” she said. “I didn’t even know what it meant to be truly sober.”
Her methamphetamine use had intensified slowly during the Covid-19 pandemic, as she lost a job she had held for a decade, grieved the death of the grandmother who helped raise her and grappled with depression. With little structure to her days, each one felt like “Groundhog Day,” Ms. Corbitt said; she would tell herself that she’d get high one last time and then seek help. “And it just never ended,” she added.
Treatment interrupted this cycle, but her life wasn’t set up to support her sobriety. Ms. Corbitt, who is 37 and lives in Milton, Mass., tried Alcoholics Anonymous but struggled to feel a sense of fellowship, finding some meetings “a little judgy.”

The short version: The cheap Vegas buffet is a classic loss leader. It bleeds money on plates so the casino floor can win it back at the slots. That trade only works when gambling is still the main event, which is exactly why the surviving cheap buffets sit at locals-focused casinos like the South Point, and why the Strip has either killed its buffets or repriced them into $80-a-head destination restaurants. Gaming is now barely a quarter of Strip revenue, so a money-losing buffet there subsidizes nothing.

The scene
Line up at noon on a Friday at the South Point and you are waiting for a seafood buffet that does not open until 3 p.m. The breakfast version starts under $17 and comes with two Bloody Marys, a perk the hotel trimmed back only after a diner drank himself off his stool. Around 3,000 people a day move through the room. On Veterans Day the line wraps the casino floor. A family once tried to smuggle a pet parrot in next to their toddler. Security kept the humans and evicted the bird.

What happened
The Wall Street Journal reported this week that the 11 restaurants at the South Point hotel and casino lose somewhere between $1.5 million and $2 million every month, and the 83-year-old owner, Michael Gaughan, is happy to keep it that way. The buffet is one of the biggest drains. Gaughan is one of the last individual casino operators in a town now run mostly by public companies, private-equity firms, and real-estate investment trusts, which is precisely why he can run a kitchen at a permanent loss and answer to no one about it.
His logic is a single sentence: “The buffets get people in.” They show up for cheap food, they stay, and they gamble. The South Point leans harder on gambling than the Vegas average, its customers are mostly locals rather than tourists, and parking is free. Every one of those facts is load-bearing.
The backstory
Vegas used to be full of rooms like this. Cheap, bottomless, and deliberately unprofitable, built to pull bodies onto the casino floor. Then the pandemic hit, social-distancing rules gutted the self-serve format, and the city’s economics tilted toward affluent travelers who would rather splurge on a tasting menu than graze a steam table. A 2020 academic paper on customer satisfaction studied more than a dozen buffets on the Strip. Four are left.
The survivors are fighting for it. Circus Circus, owned by billionaire Phil Ruffin, cut its buffet to three days a week and dropped the price to keep the doors open. Its executive chef runs the room like a thrift operation: unsold prime rib from the steakhouse becomes buffet stew the next day, closeout deals fill the tables, and breakfast replaces lunch because eggs and potatoes cost less than a carving station. In peak summer, that discipline nets the buffet a small monthly profit. It is survival by a thousand small cuts, not a thriving line of business.
The business model angle
A loss leader only works if the thing it leads to is worth more than the thing it loses. Supermarkets sell milk near cost because the shopper fills the rest of the cart. Printer makers give away hardware to sell ink. The cheap casino buffet is the same move: sacrifice margin on food to capture a high-margin gambler for the afternoon. We have written before about how the casino business model runs on the house edge rather than on any single amenity, and the buffet is the clearest example of an amenity that exists purely to feed that edge.
The catch is that the whole trade collapses the moment the back end stops being gambling. If the customer walking in for the $17 breakfast is a tourist who will see a show at the Sphere and never touch a slot machine, the casino just ate a $2 million loss and got nothing on the other side. This is not a food story. It is a customer-acquisition story where the acquired customer has to convert into the high-margin product. The same trap sits inside any loss-leader model, from homebuilders to grocers: when the profit engine behind the discount weakens, the discount stops being clever and starts being a hole.
Why the math broke on the Strip
Here is the number that explains the whole split. In fiscal 2025, gaming made up just 26.1% of total Las Vegas Strip revenue, according to the Nevada Gaming Abstract. Nearly three-quarters now comes from rooms, food, entertainment, and retail. That is the 27th straight year gambling has been the minority of what the Strip actually sells. The modern Strip is a hospitality and experience business that happens to keep a casino attached, not a casino that happens to run hotels.
So the loss-leader logic that still works at the South Point is dead on the Strip. If gambling is barely a quarter of your revenue, you cannot justify losing millions on a buffet to feed it. You do one of two things: kill the buffet, or turn it into a product that earns its own keep. That is exactly the barbell you now see.

At the cheap end, South Point breakfast runs $16.95 and Circus Circus starts around $19.95, priced as bait. At the high end, the Wynn buffet starts near $80 and Caesars’ Bacchanal charges $87 and up, with lines that can stretch three to four hours. Caesars calls Bacchanal the highest-grossing restaurant in America and describes it as nine open kitchens rather than a buffet. Excalibur sits in between at about $33, priced as a standalone meal rather than a giveaway. The affordable middle, the true loss-leader buffet, is the part that disappeared, because it only ever made sense as a subsidy and the Strip no longer has anything to subsidize it with.
The clincher: in fiscal 2025 the Strip’s net income collapsed 81% to roughly $154 million even as total revenue held near a record $21 billion, and Las Vegas visitor volume fell about 7.5%. Over the same stretch, the locals-focused casinos, the ones still running the old grind-them-on-the-floor model, held revenue flat or grew it. The business model that keeps the cheap buffet alive is also the one weathering the downturn better.
The risk
The obvious risk to the survivors is cost. Food inflation, labor, and the sheer waste of an all-you-can-eat format make the loss leader more expensive to run every year, and there is a ceiling on how much gambling revenue a locals casino can realistically recapture per cover. Circus Circus already had to cut days and lean on leftovers just to break even in summer.
The deeper risk is demographic. The loss leader assumes the person eating cheap will gamble enough to cover the loss. If the locals customer base ages out, tightens its budget, or shifts to online betting from the couch, the conversion rate that justifies the buffet quietly erodes, and the model stops working long before anyone decides to close the room. Gaughan can afford to lose money on purpose because he is private and stubborn. A public operator running the same numbers would have shut it years ago, which is the real reason the cheap buffet is now a two- or three-property phenomenon rather than a citywide one.

It died wherever the profit engine behind the subsidy got too small to justify it, and it survived wherever that engine still runs hot.
That is the transferable lesson for any operator running a loss leader. Your discounted product is only as safe as the margin business it feeds. The day that back-end weakens, your loss leader flips from a growth tactic into a fixed cost you forgot to question. The Strip forgot, ran the buffet out of habit, and then quietly repriced or killed it once the numbers stopped lying. Gaughan did not forget, which is the whole reason he can still afford to lose $2 million a month and call it a bargain. Watch the engine, not the loss leader. When the engine cools, the discount is the first thing that should go, and it is usually the last thing anyone touches.

On June 16, three days after SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX) closed its June 12, 2026 initial public offering, SpaceX's market capitalization hit an all-time high of $2.64 trillion, and Musk's paper wealth peaked near $1.45 trillion. By the close on July 23, the Bloomberg Billionaires Index pegged him at roughly $738 billion. Somewhere between $650 billion and $700 billion of paper fortune has vaporized in about five weeks. The catalysts arrived in sequence. A delayed Starship launch on July 16 hit the stock in extended trading. Post-IPO enthusiasm faded. A broader reappraisal of AI-linked valuations rolled through the tape. By July 21, SPCX had briefly traded below $120 a share, dipping under its IPO price after seven straight down sessions. Short sellers have booked, according to Reddit chatter cited in retail forums, $15.5 billion in profit on the slide.
Tesla's Profit Air Pocket
Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) provided the second leg of the drawdown. On July 22, after the close, Tesla reported Q2 revenue of $28.24 billion, beating estimates by 7.10%, alongside a record 480,126 deliveries. The problem sat below the top line. Non-GAAP EPS came in at $0.33 against a $0.5367 consensus, a 38.51% miss. Operating income collapsed 56.88% year-over-year to $398 million. Operating margin was 1.4%. Free cash flow swung to negative $1.09 billion as capex jumped 141.81% to $5.79 billion.
The blowout in operating expense, up 47% YoY to $4.35 billion, reflects Tesla's AI, robotaxi, Optimus and Dojo spend, plus stock-based compensation tied to Musk's 2025 CEO Performance Award. Shares closed at $319.69 on July 23, off 14.52% on the day, 16.23% over the past month, and 28.91% year to date. Market cap now stands at $1.20 trillion.

Iran threatened to strike Israel again should US President Donald Trump expand the strikes on Iran to include the capital, Tehran, the New York Times reported Thursday, citing two Iranian officials.
The two officials told the newspaper that Iran’s Armed Forces are anticipating and preparing for the possibility of the war expanding if Trump carries through with recent threats to strike Tehran and critical infrastructure.
The officials further said that If Trump does follow through with said threats, Iran will expand the fight regionally, including by striking Tel Aviv and asking the Houthi rebels in Yemen to close Bab al-Mandab, a strategic waterway in the Red Sea.
Earlier on Thursday, Trump told Axios' Barak Ravid that he is considering launching an attack on Iran on a scale beyond all previous attacks.
"I am considering a massive attack. Bigger than ever before. I am close to making a decision. We are all set for it," Trump said.
Trump added that Israel would join the US military's operation if he asked, but said that the US does not need the help in order to carry out the strikes he is considering.

One partner country told CBS News there is a need for a pause in fighting, particularly given the intensity of Iranian strikes that have been battering Kuwait and Bahrain. Kuwait said earlier this week that Iran struck its infrastructure, damaging electricity and desalination plants.
In an interview last month with "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan," Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth denied that there was any crisis with the stockpiles. He conceded that some munitions may take more time to produce than others, but he told Brennan, "We've got lots of them, we're building more than ever before."

Through a haze of smoke, a lone Ukrainian armoured vehicle suddenly burst into view. The BMP-2 accelerated towards a barricade of tyres and debris, smashing through it in seconds as protesters scattered. Behind the controls, on the chaotic streets of Mariupol on 9 May 2014, was a little-known officer named Mykhailo Drapatyi. Chris Anne Affleck, the mother of Ben and Casey Affleck, has died at the age of 83 from pancreatic cancer. Her family revealed the sad news Thursday following her passing on June 2, according to a Legacy obituary.
The matriarch of the family is survived by sons Ben, 53, and Casey, 50; and five grandkids: Indiana, 22, Violet, 20, Atticus, 18, Fin, 17, and Sam, 14, who were described as 'the animating force of her last two decades.'
According to her obit, she had been told by doctors she had six months to live last December, and her final wish was to see her grandson's high school graduation. She attended the ceremony this past May 31, and died while sleeping just two days later.

Washington — The House on Thursday voted to direct President Trump to end the war with Iran, with four Republicans joining Democrats to rebuke the president over his handling of the conflict as fighting ramps up.
The chamber voted 214 to 208 to adopt a war powers resolution introduced by Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington. It would direct the president "to remove the use of United States Armed Forces from hostilities against the Islamic Republic of Iran or any part of its government or military, including potential ground forces in a combat role or used for occupation," without express authorization from Congress.
Republican Reps. Tom Barrett of Michigan, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Warren Davidson of Ohio and Thomas Massie of Kentucky split from their party to vote in favor of the resolution.

Two years later, ISIS fighters shared online posts claiming that Kamleh, nicknamed 'Dr Jihad', had been killed in Syria during the final battle of Raqqa.
It has since emerged that Kamleh, now 41, is alive, holed up in a high-security prison in Baghdad where he is being interrogated by Iraqi counter-terrorism officials.
He is one of 13 men linked to ISIS hoping to be released from custody and return to Australia, The Australian newspaper reported on Wednesday.
This is despite him previously vowing to never return to Australia.
Following his 'death' in the Raqqa siege, it is understood Kamleh continued working as a mobile field doctor for another two years before he was arrested in 2019 while 'shifting through the frontlines of the Caliphate'.
The update came weeks after 10 ISIS brides and their children returned to Australia from Syria.

Is Trump (& Family) Stealing Venezuelan Oil Money?
The Trump administration has collected more than $13bn in revenues from Venezuelan oil sales this year, according to FT calculations, but has said almost nothing about what has happened to the money.
The US took control of Venezuela’s oil exports and suspended some sanctions after capturing President Nicolás Maduro in January and installing vice-president Delcy RodrÃguez as leader.
Oil revenues make up approx 1/4 of Venzuela's GDP and the sanctions relief was expected to provide a major boost to the economy, which was in crisis even before last month’s devastating earthquakes.
But six months after the US seized control of the funds, economists say the evidence of a recovery in Venezuela is relatively muted — a potential sign that the US has not sent all the revenues back to Caracas.
Washington has given diverging accounts of what it is doing with the money, ranging from an executive order describing its own role as “custodial” to President Donald Trump saying the US was “making a lot of money” from Venezuelan oil.
US lawmakers from both parties are starting to pressure the administration to explain where it has gone and what it is doing to prevent corruption around its allocation.

But what sets apart the latest moves by Donald Trump Jr. is how he and Mr. Malik, through 1789 Capital, are cashing in on the policies of the current administration openly and without apology.
Many of the companies 1789 has invested in have large government contracts while others, like Polymarket, have benefited directly from new Trump policies or rollbacks of existing laws. The firm bought shares in some of the most coveted private companies before many went public, including SpaceX, Anduril, Cerebras and Reflection AI, often by leveraging their political and business connections to secure a stake or to help boost the companies’ sales.
Just two years ago, 1789 managed a few hundred million dollars. It now oversees more than $3 billion. Its main investment fund generated returns of roughly 200 percent as of June 30, according to a person familiar with the firm’s performance. While still early in its investment cycle, those returns eclipse the average returns of about 21 percent from venture capital firms started in 2023, according to PitchBook, a provider of financial data.
Angela Lee, a venture capital professor at Columbia Business School, said she’s never seen a firm started by first-time fund managers raise so much money. “Any way you cut it, it’s unprecedented,” she said. One plausible explanation for the firm’s rapid success, she said: “People are paying for proximity to power.”
Mr. Trump and Mr. Malik, a former Democrat and banker, openly embrace their connections to President Trump’s broader circle of donors, influential supporters and high-ranking officials, but they scoff at questions of whether any of their success comes from direct access to the president.
As a private citizen, the president’s son said, he is free to invest however he wants and is doing nothing illegal. He said he talks to his father only “every few weeks,” never discusses business with him, and holds “no policy position and no role within the administration whatsoever.” Mr. Malik frequently mentions that he’s never even “set foot in the White House.”

THIRD SUSPECT CHARGED IN HOME INVASION AND ASSAULT CASE
(July 22nd)
A third person has been charged in connection with an early July home invasion and assault in Harbour Grace that left one person hospitalized.
The RCMP East District General Investigation Section (GIS) says 33-year-old Jerry Lee-Welkisch was arrested on July 20 with the assistance of RCMP Traffic Services East. He has been charged with robbery, breaking and entering with intent, and aggravated assault.
Lee-Welkisch was held in custody at the Harbour Grace RCMP detachment and appeared in provincial court on Tuesday.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred at approximately 4:15 a.m. on July 3, when Trinity-Conception District RCMP responded to a report of a break and enter at a residence in Harbour Grace.
Police say three suspects forced their way into the home, where one occupant was assaulted with a weapon. The victim was transported to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Investigators determined that the suspects and the victim were known to one another and believe the incident was a targeted attack. RCMP East District GIS was assigned to lead the investigation.
Earlier this month, Christopher Bursey and Steven Clowe were also arrested in connection with the home invasion. Bursey has since been released with conditions, while Clowe remains in custody and is expected to appear in court again in August 2026.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. RCMP say no further details will be released at this time in order to preserve the integrity of the investigation.

The fledgling firm, run by the president’s oldest son and his partner Omeed Malik, has made investments in A.I. and defense technology that have tripled in value in just months.

As the Republican National Convention was wrapping up in July 2024, Republican heavyweights crowded into a rooftop bar with views of the Milwaukee skyline. In a sea of suits, Donald Trump Jr. made a beeline for a man in a black T-shirt: Shayne Coplan, the 26-year-old founder of Polymarket, the prediction market betting site.
The president’s son told Mr. Coplan he was impressed with Polymarket and how its results, not the polls, reflected what he was hearing from voters about his father’s prospects of returning to office. That rooftop meeting marked the start of a lucrative relationship, showing how Donald Trump Jr. and his business partner Omeed Malik invested in a company whose fortunes would be affected by President Trump’s policies — a scenario that has played out repeatedly as their investment firm, 1789 Capital, has grown.
In the case of Polymarket, the government had banned it from taking monetary wagers from U.S. residents, but last year a federal regulator granted it an operating license in the United States. Worth $300 million when 1789 invested, the platform is now valued at $15 billion.
“He just took sort of the approach that we did, which is like, ‘Fuck all you guys,’ ’’ Donald Trump Jr. said of Mr. Coplan and of his own critics in an interview with The New York Times about investments he’s worked on during his father’s second term.

Mr. Malik said both he and Mr. Trump know the people involved in the administration “on a personal basis” and that helps them position their investment strategies to benefit from White House policies.
Their approach is distinct from that of Mr. Trump’s brother-in-law, Jared Kushner, who had been involved in early peace negotiations with Iran while his private investment firm was seeking to raise funds from U.S. allies in the Middle East. (His firm later said it would not seek additional money from allies while Mr. Kushner was volunteering for the admin)
Jessica Tillipman, the associate dean for government procurement law studies at George Washington University School of Law, said there are few actual rules for family members of the president, though many of them have gone to great length to avoid even the appearance of cashing in on the Oval Office. (Hunter Biden’s overseas business dealing were a recent exception.)
“A lot of this is based on norms,” she said. “The challenge we have is that when there’s no interest in kind of respecting the norms and from an optics perspective, that is troubling.”
A Former Democrat Goes for Trump
Mr. Trump and Mr. Malik first met at a barbecue in the Hamptons during the summer of 2018. They were introduced by Kimberly Guilfoyle, Mr. Trump’s former fiancée and the current United States ambassador to Greece.
Mr. Malik was in the middle of starting a new broker-dealer firm after a messy departure from his job at Bank of America.
A former corporate lawyer, Mr. Malik joined the bank in 2012 and within a year, at age 33, had become the bank’s youngest-ever managing director. He worked in the prime brokerage department and built a roster of hedge fund clients, including George Soros, Scott Bessent and Marc Lasry’s Avenue Capital.
In early 2018, the bank said in a regulatory filing that Mr. Malik was “discharged” for “personal conduct in violation of firm standards.” Mr. Malik filed an arbitration claim against Bank of America alleging defamation and discrimination. Within a few months, Mr. Malik settled with the bank for more than $10 million, according to a person familiar with the undisclosed deal.
While on Wall Street, Mr. Malik had been an active fund-raiser for Democratic candidates, including Hillary Clinton and Joe Kennedy III.
During their first meeting in the Hamptons, Mr. Trump said he found common ground with Mr. Malik politically. “I can play the radical on Twitter,” he said in an interview in Miami. “But I’m pretty reasonable. I grew up in New York City. I see all sides.”
By 2020, Mr. Malik started attending Trump re-election events and donated roughly $100,000 to the campaign. Together, the two men hashed out a set of shared ideals, they said, that would eventually form the basis for some of their investment strategies at 1789.
In their opinion, much of the infrastructure that makes America work, including banking and the mainstream media, were excluding conservative viewpoints. They also worried about China’s growing influence.
Ahead of the 2020 election, they coauthored an opinion column in The Daily Caller, a conservative online publication, about the need for the United States to take back control of its manufacturing supply chain and prevent American firms from investing in China-controlled companies like TikTok.
In early 2021, with the Biden administration in power and frustrated by Covid restrictions, both men moved from New York to Palm Beach, Fla., with their families. Mr. Malik became a member of Mar-a-Lago.
A Firm in Overdrive
Within a year of his move, Mr. Malik pitched his deepening network of Republicans on starting a new investment firm called 1789 Capital, named after the year the Bill of Rights was written.
His two co-founders and investors were Rebekah Mercer, a top donor to Republican causes whose father once ran the hedge fund Renaissance Technologies; and Christopher Buskirk, a co-founder of the Rockbridge Group, a secretive network of wealthy Trump supporters. (Vice President JD Vance is also a Rockbridge co-founder.)

By late 2023, 1789 Capital had raised roughly $100 million from investors, including more than $15 million that Mr. Malik, Mr. Buskirk and Ms. Mercer had put in. Mr. Malik set up an office a few miles down the road from Mar-a-Lago.
Less than a week after his father’s re-election, Mr. Trump took the stage at a Rockbridge event in Las Vegas and told several hundred donors that he was joining 1789.
With the president-elect’s son on board, the firm went into overdrive.
The two men met potential investors in South Korea and the Middle East. They became regular speakers at major investor conferences in Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
Flush with new investments, 1789 quickly deployed money into a wide range of companies, including many that are now benefiting from Trump administration policies aimed at ensuring that military weapons, raw materials and critical technologies are developed in the United States and not in China.
Among them are defense contractors Anduril and Hadrian and Axiom Space, a company that’s looking to build a commercial successor to the International Space Station.
Last fall, 1789 invested in Vulcan Elements, a rare earths magnet manufacturer, then valued at about $200 million. A few months later, the company landed a $620 million loan commitment from the Defense Department. The company is now worth roughly $2 billion.
The timing of 1789’s investment prompted an inquiry by Democrats in Congress about whether the firm exerted any influence in the decision to extend the federal loan. A spokeswoman for the Democratic members on the House Natural Resources Committee, which is scrutinizing the deal, said the inquiry is ongoing.
But Mr. Malik said he learned about Vulcan Elements’ federal loan from a company news release issued after 1789 made its investment; Mr. Trump said he has never met or spoken to anyone at the company.
The two men say they made the reasonable assumption that Vulcan Elements, one of the few private American producers of rare earth magnets used for cellphones, cars, and planes, would be a winning investment during an administration focused on promoting U.S.-based companies in critical sectors. (Their firm invests only in private U.S. companies and doesn’t take controlling stakes.)
“It’s not like it takes a genius to figure this out,” Mr. Trump said. “I don’t have inside information.”
‘Good for America’
For companies looking to leverage their ties to the Trump administration, an investment from 1789 is seen as a stamp of approval.
On a recent investor call, the chief executive of the 3-D printing company VulcanForms repeatedly invoked 1789 Capital’s investment, implying that the financial firm’s political proximity could help bring about opportunities for the start-up, according to one person on the call.

Mr. Malik was unaware of that investor call and said he can’t police what companies he invests in say about the firm.
The reality is that 1789’s connections can transform a company’s fortunes dramatically — as it did for a small artificial intelligence developer called Reflection AI.
Last year, 1789 invested in the little-known company, which builds so-called open source systems. These systems allow Reflection’s clients to create their own A.I. models rather than rely on ones created by the likes of OpenAI and Anthropic.
Building a successful and enduring open source A.I. system is a priority for Silicon Valley. Reflection A.I., 1789 believed, had the potential to become an American-made alternative to DeepSeek, an open source system developed by China.
The company made its first investment in Reflection AI in the summer of 2025, when it was valued at $3.5 billion.
Mr. Malik then tapped his network to find Reflection AI one of its first customers: the large South Korean conglomerate Shinsegae Group.
When the Rockbridge Group opened an international outpost in South Korea last year, it named Shinsegae’s chairman, Chung Yong-jin, as one of the founding board members. A few months later, he attended a Christmas party at Vice President Vance’s house in Washington. Shinsegae is also an investor in 1789.
In March, Reflection AI and Shinsegae jointly announced a plan to build a multibillion-dollar data center in South Korea that will house the tech company’s open-source models.
The data center, which would be used by Shinsegae and also the Korean government, was described in a joint news release by the two companies as pivotal moment in U.S.-Korean relations. The Commerce Department designated the data center as the first flagship project under its new “American AI Exports Program.”
This spring, 1789 hosted an online webinar for Reflection AI’s executive team and dozens of potential investors. Participants were told they had a week to write checks, which had to be larger than $5 million. As is common in private investments, investors would pay a fee to 1789 for access to the deal.
With a current $25 billion valuation, Reflection AI is now worth seven times more than when 1789 made its original investment last summer.
In a prerecorded video for that webinar, Donald Trump Jr. described Reflection AI as “good for America.”
