Waffen-SS Entrance Requirements
Entrance requirements for the Waffen-SS varied based on the stage of the war. Early on, volunteers faced highly stringent racial, physical, and political criteria. As the war progressed and manpower shortages worsened, standards were drastically relaxed, transitioning to widespread conscription and the acceptance of non-German foreign volunteers.
Initial Requirements (Pre-War & Early War)
Established by Heinrich Himmler in 1934, the initial standards were designed to create an "elite" fighting force.
Racial Purity: Recruits needed to prove their Aryan ancestry back to 1800 (1750 for officers) with no Jewish heritage.
Physical Specifications: Applicants had to be between the ages of 17 and 23 and measure at least 1.74 meters (5 ft 9 in) tall. Stricter units, like the Leibstandarte, required a minimum height of 1.78 meters (5 ft 10 in).
Health: 20/20 vision was mandatory, and candidates initially needed to be free of dental fillings.
Background: Recruits had to be unmarried, possess no criminal record, and be free of mental or physical defects.
Religion: Members could belong to various faiths, but atheists and Jewish individuals were barred.
Relaxed Requirements (Mid-to-Late War)
Due to severe personnel losses from 1940 onward, the stringent criteria were progressively rolled back to sustain troop numbers.
Physical Adjustments: Height requirements were lowered, dental fillings and eyeglasses for mild vision correction were permitted, and the strict age limitations were removed.
Foreign Recruitment: Facing shortages, the Waffen-SS began accepting "Germanic" volunteers from other European countries.
Conscription: By 1943, standards were relaxed to the point that recruits only needed to pass a basic medical examination, and many personnel were forcibly drafted.
