Still, perhaps there is something in the vice president’s words that demands soul-searching. On both sides, there are those who want perpetual war: Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas, which want to bleed Israel; and on the other side, Netanyahu and his far-right partners, who dream of a “super Sparta.” Either way, although the question of how Israel reached this point is critical, and must be examined thoroughly by a state commission of inquiry if one is ever established, this is not the time. Given the severity of the situation, Israel does not have the luxury of dwelling on the past right now. It urgently needs to look ahead and understand how it can get out of the trap into which it has fallen, or perhaps the trap it created for itself. So what should be done? Return to sane dialogue Domestically, Israel needs a broad social compact strong enough to overcome division and hatred, one that allows all Israelis, Jews and Arabs, religious and secular, right-wing and left-wing, and everyone in between, to live in peace and feel that this home belongs to all of them. Establishing a state commission of inquiry into the October 7 disaster, together with a fair and equal draft law for all, would be first steps toward internal healing. The officer, however, had a big strike against him. Like other Black military leaders, he had been encouraged by his superiors to help the Navy recruit and retain minority officers, who remain significantly underrepresented in the force. His years-old remarks on the importance of diversity had been flagged in a secret vetting process designed to weed out senior leaders whom Mr. Hegseth and his team pegged as a problem. Now Admiral Barnett’s remarks were being cited as a reason to deny him a promotion that senior Navy officials said he deserved. ‘It’s Black over white’ Mr. Hegseth has argued that the troops most likely to suffer discrimination in the military are white. The officials undertaking the reviews hoped that if they could show that the officers had been following previous Pentagon policies that Mr. Hegseth would allow their nominations to go forward to the White House and Congress for final approval. Inside the Pentagon, such material was referred to as “D-ROG,” short for derogatory material. Once the reviews led by each military service were complete, Mr. Hegseth’s staff conducted their own searches to make sure that the services had not missed or intentionally ignored anything. Congress had entrusted management of one-star and two-star promotion boards to the service secretaries, not the secretary of defense. The first test case was with an Army one-star promotion board. Last fall, Mr. Hegseth ordered Army Secretary Daniel P. Driscoll to remove two Black and two female officers from a 29-person promotion list. Mr. Hegseth instead removed nine officers from the Navy’s original 31-person list. Soon Mr. Hegseth was pulling officers from nearly every active duty and reserve officer promotion list. Officers who had spoken publicly about the importance of diversity in the ranks were removed from lists. So too were those who had strongly urged their troops to get the Covid vaccine. Even the services often are not told why individual officers are vetoed. Military officials, though, said they have noticed patterns. Officers who had commanded aircraft carriers or amphibious assault ships have been especially vulnerable. The reason: Those ships have public affairs sailors on board who documented their skippers participating in events related to diversity or the Covid vaccine. Firearms, hanging, poisoning When Americans do take their own lives, they primarily do so by one of three methods: firearms, hanging, or poisoning. About nine in ten men and women use one of them. Last year, a team of researchers primarily based out of the University of Texas delved into the data on suicide in the hopes of identifying trends that could lead to useful interventions to save lives. The researchers made use of the National Violent Death Reporting System, specifically looking at data on 94,454 U.S. adult suicides between 2017 and 2019. They found that 54.7% of men and 30% of women who died by suicide used firearms, 28.4% of men and 28.5% of women hanged themselves, and 9% of men and 32.1% of women died by poisoning. Other methods like cutting, jumping from heights, running in front of a vehicle, drowning, and electrocution were used in the remaining cases. As prior studies have revealed, firearms and hanging are highly lethal methods of self-harm, resulting in death about 89.7% and 84.5% of the time. Suicide attempts by poisoning only result in death about 8% of the time when imbibing drugs or liquids and 56.6% of the time when inhaling gases. Firearm suicides are more impulsive The researchers found that firearm suicide deaths were higher in states with a greater prevalence of gun ownership, and more specifically among people from the southern U.S. and people with a history of military service. Firearm suicides also tended to be more impulsive than those from other methods. Victims shot themselves following a sudden life shock such as an eviction, loss of employment, or relationship fight.

Trajically hilarious ... OTTAWA — A Canadian was shot and killed at a South African wilderness park on Wednesday in what authorities said appears to be an accident. The South African Police Service said a 69-year-old Canadian man asked a park guide whether his gun was real, resulting in him being shot to death. South African National Parks reports the incident happened in Kruger National Park at an evening barbecue picnic. It says the Canadian was part of a group which was invited inside the park for what's known locally as a bush braai. In a statement offering condolences, the agency said preliminary information indicates a private guide "accidentally discharged a firearm, resulting in the fatal injury." The police offered a more detailed account. "It is alleged that the 69-year-old male tourist approached the concession operator, who was holding a rifle, and asked if it was a real firearm. While the operator was demonstrating that it was a real rifle, the firearm reportedly discharged. The bullet struck the tourist in the upper body," says a release from the South African Police Service. The man was confirmed dead at the scene, according to police, who have opened an investigation into possible charges of culpable homicide and reckless handling of a firearm.
