10 Signs of Alcoholism
The clinical term for alcoholism is alcohol use disorder (AUD). Ten common warning signs include loss of control over drinking, strong cravings, increased tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, hiding or lying about use, and neglecting responsibilities.
Key Behavioral and Psychological Signs
1. Loss of control: Drinking more or longer than planned.
2. Failed attempts to quit: Wanting to cut down but failing.
3. Obsession: Spending a large amount of time obtaining, using, or recovering from alcohol.
4. Cravings: Feeling a strong, urgent need to drink.
5. Neglecting duties: Missing work, school, or family obligations because of drinking.
Social and Physical Indicators
6. Secrecy: Hiding bottles or drinking alone.
7. High tolerance: Needing much more alcohol to feel the same effect.
8. Withdrawal: Experiencing shaking, sweating, nausea, or anxiety when sober.
9. Risky behavior: Drinking in dangerous situations, like driving.
10. Continuing despite harm: Drinking even though it damages health or relationships
